July 2018 - Youth Polo

San Diego County program brings newcomers to the game.

The Lakeside Polo Youth Foundation is dedicated to inspiring and educating a new generation of polo players at Lakeside Polo Club in East County San Diego. Kids learn horsemanship, polo skills, and teamwork on the beautiful grass field and polo arena at River Valley Equestrian Center, not far from the Lakeside Rodeo. With its emphasis on a strong work ethic and positive atmosphere, the innovative LPYF encourages children to learn and improve their game.

Polo has been part of the Lakeside scene since 1956 when Eugene “Doc” Hering formed the Lakeside Polo Club. The Lakeside Polo Youth Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization spearheaded by ranch owners Nicole and Darin Bankhead. Nicole Bankhead coaches the Lakeside interscholastic team, helping boys and girls improve their riding ability, communication skills, and horse knowledge. The result is riders who are confident, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic about this unique sport. Students from elementary through high school participate in club chukkers, United States Polo Association (USPA) clinics, and prestigious tournaments like the USPA National Youth Tournament Series (NYTS).
