Simon Nizri Show Jumping

This year’s HITS Thermal hunter/jumper show circuit marked the official launch of Simon Nizri Show Jumping. Simon, of course, is a West Coast jumping circuit favorite, but he had opted a few years back to sell his beautiful Wildflower Ranch in Rancho Santa Fe and head East. He recently decided California was pretty nice afterall and has settled back in at Wildflower and established a full-fledged training and sales barn.

Twine Awareness

As I walk into the barn, I can’t help but notice the collection of bailing twine hanging from my instructor’s neck like a rustic version of a Hawaiian flower lei. Or perhaps a pale imitation of those beads the girls earn at Mardi Gras. I’m careful not to ask what she’s been up to this morning.

RIP Verdicci, aka “Chance”

Verdicci, the longtime partner of Catherine Rose Chamberlain in her remarkable ascent in the dressage world, had to be euthanized in mid-December. The decision was made following complications from colic surgery. During a follow-up procedure to lavage his abdomen, his condition, an infection and severe lesions on his intestine, was discovered to be much worse than expected and not something that he could recover from.

Show jumping’s biggest stars took center stage at HITS Desert Horse Park in Thermal for Sunday’s $350,000 Sunshine Grand Prix FEI CSI-5*. Talent was not in short supply as many notable names filled the main event’s Order of Go including three of the top ten riders from the Longines FEI Jumping World Rankings – Kent Farrington, Beezie Madden and McLain Ward. But, in front of a packed grandstand, a live webcast on HITS TV, and sold out VIP, it was 23-year-old Lucy Davis, of Los Angeles and Barron, owned by Old Oak Farm, who showed them all how it’s done.
