Mandy Porter is finishing summer in style. She won the $40,000 Bentley Grand Prix at the Menlo Charity Show up north the first weekend of August, then did the same at the $30,000 Markel Insurance Grand Prix down south in San Juan Capistrano the next weekend. Both victories came aboard David Murdoch’s Eminent.

Twine Awareness

As I walk into the barn, I can’t help but notice the collection of bailing twine hanging from my instructor’s neck like a rustic version of a Hawaiian flower lei. Or perhaps a pale imitation of those beads the girls earn at Mardi Gras. I’m careful not to ask what she’s been up to this morning.

Shayna Simon To Arroyo Del Mar

Young dressage trainer Shayna Simon relocates to Steffen and Shannon Peters’ Arroyo De Mar Stables in Del Mar, where she has room for a few more horses and riders. Shayna spent several years developing young Lusitanos for Brookside Equestrian Center in Walnut, and most recently based her training business at Oakridge Farm, in San Diego County. She was “sad to leave” but looks forward to furthering her dressage knowledge by working alongside Steffen, an Olympian, and highly accomplished Shannon, as well as the rest of Team Peters.

READY FOR ADOPTION - JOEY! 2005 TB gelding from FalconRidge Equine Rescue. He’s been in training at Harmony Farms with Ronnette Leja and myself. He’s a super sweet gelding, 16.2 hands and is coming along nicely after being previously starved by his former owner in Riverside County. Joey is schooling training level dressage and just started work over fences. Adoption fee is $1,500 payable to FalconRidge, requires intermediate or above rider as he is still very green about many things. Email or call me for details: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 858-967-5765.

I have been enjoying working with my foster horse Joey. It’s been very therapeutic for me helping him learn how to be a good horse for his rider. But I hope to adopt him out soon as I am going to have lymphedema surgery on my left leg to remove four-plus liters of lymphedema sludge out of my leg in October. Last year’s surgery, which is not covered by health insurance, was a success although the recovery was pretty rough. I finally got past the, “Can I go through this again stage?” so I’m looking again for donations and already have gotten a lot of help from all of my friends. If you would like to help, this is my GoFundMe link: http://www.gofundme.com/8ewey0

We also want to thank Charles Wilhelm who runs his final column in this issue. Charles’ articles will now be found in our sister publication, West Coast Horsemen. I personally thank Charles and Ann Wilhelm for their awesome support of California Riding Magazine and myself for all these years.

We are excited about a lot of great stories this issue. As part of our dressage emphasis, we have reports from all over the state and well beyond. Read about the Andreas Hausberger clinic in the Bay Area, Rebecca Rigdon and David Blake’s new digs in San Diego County, the “Anke (Herbert) Effect,” Catherine Rose Chamberlain’s ascent and Genay Vaughn’s engaging account of this summer’s European adventure.

We’ve also spotlighted rehab and therapeutic products and services, starting with the remarkable tale of eventers Sarah Braun and Perfect Intention’s comeback from way too many health hardships. Plus, competition reports and photos galore from Camelot Equestrian Park, Franktown Meadows and Surf City.

First-hand accounts from show jumper Sydney Callaway and dressage rider Cassidy Gallman bring the North American Junior Young Rider Championships to life. Our volunteer reporter from the eventing community, Madi Holtzman, went straight from Kentucky to The Event at Rebecca Farms in Montana, so her NAJYRC report will follow in our September issue.

Thanks to all our awesome story subjects and contributors!

Happy Riding!

A Big, Scary Word

by Bob Goddard

Let’s not be afraid of anthropomorphism. Yes, it’s a big, scary, sci-fi kind of word and it’s impossible to pronounce gracefully the first time you try, but the meaning is easy to grasp. It’s simply the practice of assigning human attributes to animals. And things, if you want to take it that far.
