Soon after we got the news that our first granddaughter was on the way, I geared up. I bought horse toys, stuffed horses, horse books and horse clothes. I got anything and everything I could get my hands on, except, of course, an actual horse. But Aubrey was going to be introduced to the world of equines at the earliest possible moment. I would see to that.

In what's already been a remarkable life, Arabian breeder and trainer Sheila Varian received two new honors this summer. A documentary on her life, The Legacy of Sheila Varian, had its world premier in early August and she was inducted into the Western States Horse Expo's Hall of Fame for 2014.

Dressage, para-dressage and reining kick off the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, on Mon., Aug. 25, following opening ceremonies on Sat., Aug. 23. The quadrennial competition takes place in Normandy, France.

The Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2014 in Normandy wrapped up in early September with the final competition, individual show jumping, which turned out to be a fingernail-biting experience for the United States.

Lauren and Lovey

After finishing her season in Crossrails and Short Stirrup last November, Lauren Flather set a lofty goal of attending Pony Finals in Kentucky. In February, she headed to Thermal on her recently purchased small pony hunter Luvin' It. By her second week there, she was earning top ribbons among stiff competition and finishing as reserve champion.

Rancho El Encanto - Sleepy little town producing spectacular Spanish horses!

Even without knowing the property's name, Rancho El Encanto poses an enchanting sight when glimpsed from a car window cruising by on a winding, wooded road in the Monterey area. In the paddock visible from the road, buckskin, gray, bay and black young horses frolic in the shade of spreading oaks and pines.

Richard Spooner rode Cristallo to victory and was second with Chivas Z in the $85,000 Talisman Energy Cup 1.50m, held during the Spruce Meadows Continental CSIO 5* Tournament in Calgary, Canada in mid-June. There were 55 entries in the competition, and they contested a course set by Anthony D'Ambrosio of the United States.

There were just five in the jump-off after a tough first round with a skinny vertical at the end of the ring that caught many horses and riders.
