Laura Graves and Verdades scored a personal best Grand Prix Freestyle of 85.307% to place second in the FEI World Cup™ Dressage Final on Saturday, April 1 in Omaha. Kasey Perry-Glass and Goerklintgaards Dublet and Steffen Peters and Rosamunde closed out the competition in the top 10.

Despite the challenges brought about because of the EHV outbreak at Los Angeles Equestrian Center, causing Langer Equestrian Group to move the LA Season Finale to Hansen Dam Equestrian Center only 14 days before the start of the Nov. 17-20 show, the competition and the LAHJA Junior, Senior, and Pony Finals came off beautifully.

When the World Cup Finals first went to Las Vegas in 2000, show jumping in the “Entertainment Capital of the World” was a revolutionary idea. Gazing at a ginormous horse and cowboy statue in the hallway of the South Point Hotel & Casino, it was fun to reflect on the changes that revolution has wrought. English style equestrians have clearly staked their claim on this wild west city.

Show jumping dominates the spotlight, while polo and dressage coattail on success of an event that’s building fan base for equestrian sport.

Daniel Deusser of Germany and Equita van’t Zorgvliet emerged as champions of the Longines Masters of Los Angeles’ main event, the Longines Grand Prix. The Oct. 2 class closed four days of top level, fan friendly show jumping held at the Long Beach Convention Center, Sept. 29-Oct. 2.

The surfer’s slogan “Locals Only” was a good fit for the winners circle at the Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping Del Mar on Saturday, Oct. 22. Enrique Gonzalez, Eric Navet and Eduardo Menezes ride for foreign countries, but they are transplanted Californians at this point and proud of it.

Great American/USDF Region 7 & CDS Championships see record-breaking participation.

Heading into its 50th year, the California Dressage Society is getting better with age. And it’s certainly getting bigger, if the whopping 370-horse turn-out for its 49th Annual Championship is an indicator. Held at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center Sept. 29-Oct. 2, the Great American/USDF Region 7 & California Dressage Society Championships enjoyed record-breaking participation in six rings over four days.

Adult Amateurs get the spotlight in California’s innovative Equine Insurance/CDS RAAC Show Series.

During the week, they’re hard-working accountants, managers, students and medical professionals, juggling careers, family and a love of horses. But on the weekends, legions of adult amateurs can be found at the barn or in the arena, pursuing their goals both in the saddle and in the show ring. And thanks to the Equine Insurance/CDS Regional Adult Amateur Competition program (or RAAC), California Dressage Society members have the unique opportunity to earn special accolades among their peers in recognition of their well-deserved achievements.

My first impression just arriving at the First Annual Paso Robles Dressage Summer Classic, at the Paso Robles Horse Park, was “Wow.” It’s beautiful, quiet, the footing in every single arena is GGT-Footing top quality: well groomed and they managed it wonderfully throughout the day.

McLain Ward and HH Azur deliver five flawless rounds to capture Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping Final title.

On his 17th attempt, McLain Ward with HH Azur won the 2017 Longines FEI World Cup™ Final title on Sunday, April 2 in front of an electric home crowd in Omaha’s CenturyLink Center. The 2016 Rio Olympic team silver medalist combination jumped five consecutive clean rounds to secure the title that has eluded him his entire career.

Junior riders grab big opportunity at inaugural collegiate event.

HITS Desert Horse Park in Thermal hosted the top riders from the NCEA Junior Hunt Seat Medal Ranking List to compete in the inaugural West Coast NCEA Junior Hunt Seat Medal Final at National Sunshine II on Nov. 12. The West Coast NCEA Medal Final allowed pre-college equestrians to compete in the spotlight, increasing their exposure for collegiate equestrian scholarships.

Good turn-out, good times & high quality performances at Twin Rivers Ranch.

This year’s Area VI Eventing Championships helped contribute to a terrific turn-out for the Fall Horse Trials at Twin Rivers, which ran concurrently Sept. 23-25 with the Championships and the US Eventing Association’s Future Event Horse Championships. All were staged by the Baxter family at their Twin Rivers Ranch in Paso Robles. Exhibitors heaped praise on the organizers for another well-done event.

Greater San Diego Hunter Jumper Association members are dedicated to their sport and take their show season seriously. Most of the riders show all year long working towards accumulating year-end points and earning double points at the annual Championship show. Guy Thomas and Jonkheer Z lead the victory gallop in the $40,000 Bentley Los Gatos and Bentley San Francisco Grand Prix.

Saturday is a special day at Menlo Charity Horse Show. From the Leadline to the $40,000 Bentley Los Gatos and Bentley San Francisco Grand Prix, there truly is an event for everyone, including the Third Annual Tailgate Party hosted by Bentley San Los Gatos and Bentley Los San Francisco. Beautiful Bentleys adorned the lawn and equestrian furnishings provided by ELLA Palo Alto complemented the spectacular cars on display.

As the convertible Bentley arrived on the grass jumper field and the riders warmed up, an earlier start was announced. With 31 horses in the $40,000 Bentley Los Gatos and Bentley San Francisco Grand Prix the race was on to beat nightfall.

Twenty-two talented hunter derby horses and their equally impressive riders navigated Phil DeVita’s beautiful courses set for the $30,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, sponsored by the MacLean Family with MacLean Financial Group and Franktown Meadows. The popular event was held in Carson City, NV, on June 27. The day also featured hundreds of spectators, delectable food, champagne, and exquisite shopping all in honor of the tradition of fox hunting.

An extra-Spectacular WCHR Week in San Juan Capistrano concludes June 12.

In the $25,000 WCHR West Coast Hunter Spectacular at the Blenheim June Classic I, Small Gesture dominated the first round scoring with an impressive 92 from not just one panel, but both panels of judges. Competing fifth out of 30 entries, and holding the lead in Round Two, the refined dark bay, owned by Iwasaki & Reilly, finished with an overall score of 180.5.

May Day at the historic Flintridge Riding Club marked the final day of competition for the 95th Annual Flintridge Horse Show, April 28-May 1. Great weather capped the week of competition that was fun for all and a huge success for the Flintridge La Cañada Guild’s efforts to raise funds for Huntington Memorial Hospital.
