They’re the fastest growing luxury communities in the country – pre-developed, private equestrian communities that combine the tranquility of country living with the benefits of living in a lively urban area. Of these horse-friendly communities, Equestrian Lakes is striving to be at the head of the herd.
Nestled in the heartland of Kentucky’s Shelby County, the Saddlebred capitol of the world, Equestrian Lakes is situated on 934 idyllic acres. Equestrian Lakes prides itself on offering horsemen more acreage than most new communities – the average Equestrian Lakes site is between eight and twelve acres. Underground utilities keep unsightly power lines from blocking the community’s stunning views, while lighted Shelby County maintained roads chase away any visions visitors might have of getting lost on dangerous, dark country lanes.

“We took a different approach to laying out the sites,” explains Rob Gartman, Project Manager. “We picked home sites before we sectioned off the land. I took my crew out and we physically went and looked at the land. There were some sites that were just perfect for horsemen, so we made those plots larger. A lot of thought went into the layout.”
Developer and co-owner of WinStar Farms, Bill Casner wanted to make sure the sites gave equestrians the space they need to design their dream barn. It was important that Equestrian Lakes provided something for everyone. For horse enthusiasts who want to live near their horses, but are not quite up to managing their own farmstead, Equestrian Lakes offers a state of the art Grand Prix covered arena and full care barn facility.
For riders that would rather relax on the trail, there are miles of them to choose from. Eight miles of fenced, well-maintained riding and hiking trails wind through picturesque woods, creek bottoms and around the community’s four stocked lakes. For those days when even the most avid of horsemen don’t feel up to getting in the saddle, Equestrian Lakes offers a wide range of other activities for individuals that appreciate the outdoors.
“Right now we are still in phase one of the development,” says Rob. “Phase one includes the 15 acre, lighted lake path with a rubberized surface, picnic areas and playground. It also includes the club house pavilion, which will be open to residents as a place to host events – weddings, birthday parties, etc.” The elevated rock pavilion offers a magnificent panoramic view of the lake. And parties can reserve the pavilion’s kitchen, fireplace, swimming pool and kiddy pool, with ample notification.

Phase two of development will include a lighted soccer field and possibly tennis courts. Only six miles from Shelbyville, Equestrian Lakes will also house the local fire station.
Rob invites interested parties to take a 360 degree virtual tour of the community’s available plots online. “We wanted to give people a chance to get a real feel for the land; until you see the plots in 360 degrees you can’t really appreciate them. The virtual tours also give out-of-state buyers a chance to see the property before they spend the extra on flying here.”
