Fox Hill Eventing offers a customizable eventing training program at Tassajarra Equestrian Center in the Bay Area town of Danville. The program is led by Mogie Bearden-Muller, who has been riding and competing for 30 years. Mogie is an ICP Level 3 Instructor as certified by the United States Eventing Association.
Fox Hill Trainers
A Bay Area native, Mogie has worked and trained extensively with the United States Equestrian Team (USET). Currently a long-listed rider for the USET, Mogie works with the Olympic coach, and many other Olympic competitors. A graduate of the United States Pony Club, Mogie utilizes horse management and veterinary skills on a daily basis to provide the best care to all the horses in her stable. Mogie is also a cross country course designer and is currently designing Ram Tap’s lower level cross country courses in addition to other venues.
Mogie is joined by Deborah Ravinsky, an ICP Level 2 Instructor, and Ann Byron, an ICP candidate. Deborah, a rider with 15 years of experience, spent a year working for and training with Stewart Black, an Olympic Gold Medal rider from Canada. She traveled with Stewart to England where she gained tremendous competition and horse management skills. Since then, Deborah has been teaching Fox Hill’s day school training program and riding some of the horses in training each week.
Ann is an upper level eventing competitor. A recent graduate from UC Berkeley, Ann has been a working student for Mogie for seven years. With her experience on a variety of horses, Ann has gained a lot of competition knowledge and the ability to work positively with a number of equine personalities. She is competing most of the in-training and for-sale horses at Fox Hill Eventing at California horse trials.
Mogie’s primary competition horse is Select, an 8 year old Irish Sporthorse that she imported from Ireland two years ago. “Stellar was pretty green when I got her but she’s coming along quickly,” says Mogie. “She’s competed very successfully through the Three Star level at Fair Hill and other international events and I think she’ll move up to Four Star international competition in Europe next year.” Primarily because of Stellar’s preference for the turf, Mogie keeps her back East and travels there herself every couple of weeks to compete.
Successful Students
Fox Hill Eventing has numerous students who have competed through the Three Star level, on both coasts and in Europe. The clientele is a mix of upper level riders, adult amateurs, and young riders. “Because eventing includes multiple disciplines, the usual commitment is five to six days a week of riding/practicing/conditioning and one to two lessons (flat/jumping) a week,” explains Mogie. “It doesn’t have to be a seven day a week commitment. We create a program that allows people to achieve their goals in an efficient manner.”
“Our clients like to know that we are actively participating in the sport we’re instructing,” says Mogie. “For example, next weekend I’m competing at the Novice level on a client’s horse. We have the ability, if the rider has the drive and determination, to take a client to the international level.”
Fox Hill Eventing has a strong record of successful clients. They just had a student compete on the California team in the North American Young Riders Championships (equivalent to the Junior Olympics) back east this year. The team earned a silver medal in eventing. Two other students earned a Beginner Novice and Novice high point horse-of-the-year in eventing in California. Another two clients earned the adult gold medal team challenge for the Chronicle Of The Horse and one of them won the overall gold.
Top Notch Facility
Fox Hill Eventing is based at Tassajarra Equestrian Center which features a barn with 12x14 foot stalls with paddocks and private tack storage lockers. Large, medium and small turnouts are available daily, in addition to graining, blanketing and other care.
There is a large (220’ x 110’) indoor arena that has “dust free” polymer encapsulated sand footing in addition to separate dressage jumping arenas. The cross country schooling course has a water jump, banks, and ditches and is ideal for schooling. “It’s a great place to teach technique and work on technical aspects of the cross country,” says Mogie. “I call it my playground.” Other features include a gallop hill for conditioning and a hack path around the facility with lots of trails.
