Canadian Sam Walker just became the fourth boy to win the ASPCA Maclay Medal Finals since 1991. The 175-contender class was held at the National Horse Show in Kentucky this past weekend.

Earlier this season, Maclay reserve champ Brian Moggre won the USEF Hunt Seat Medal Finals.

Although men and women share podium spots equally at the international levels of equestrian competition, guys are still in the minority at the lower levels, often by big ratios. Sixteen-year-old Benjamin Heckman, for example, was one guy among 11 girls on his Interscholastic Equestrian Association team at Strides Riding Academy in Petaluma last season. See our December issue for a fun Q&A with Benjamin on what that’s like and his thoughts on attracting more young men into equestrian sports. He’s an eventer, by the way.

Along similar lines, we were excited to see Bruce Hill taking on his first international event last weekend at Galway Downs in Temecula. He and Cortina held their own in their first CCI1* outing and it looks like Bruce has grown about six inches since we last saw him! Looking forward to more accomplishments from this pair going forward!!
