The 2019 Del Mar National Horse Show Dressage Week Draws Athletes with World Cup Qualifier and International Classes

The 74th Annual Del Mar National Horse Show Dressage Week, April 25-28, 2019, is a world renowned competition, attracting horses and riders from around the globe to compete for World Cup points and in International FEI classes. The Del Mar Fairgrounds has hosted the competitive Dressage Week since 1992 and is the second part in the three-week series, with Western Week kicking off the event and Hunter/Jumper Week wrapping it up. The Fairgrounds is right down the road from the world famous Del Mar Village and the stunning Southern California coastline. It’s hard to beat the weather, location, shopping, dining and the competition couldn’t be better.

The week hosts an array of International, special classes and qualifying classes for multiple championships, including: World Cup and Pan American qualifying scores, Adequan FEI North American Youth, Presented by GOTHAM NORTH, USEF Grand Prix and Intermediaire I Championships, Young Adult ‘Brentina Cup,' Markel/USEF Young and Developing Horse Dressage National Championships and the USEF Junior and Young Rider and USEF Children and Pony Rider Championships.

The special classes for the week begin Thursday in all divisions. You can see everyone from the FEI Pony, Children or Juniors up to the Intermediaire and Grand Prix divisions kicking off.

In the CDI Young Rider Rider Division, you won’t want to miss Brooke Mancusi of Winnipeg, riding her Westphalian gelding, Wellknown. Mancusi and Wellknown swept all three classes in the CDI Junior Division, sponsored by Parker Equine Insurance, last year here at Del Mar. Later in the year at the ADA Fall Festival, Mancusi took first with her KWPN mare, Extravaganza at Fourth level and moved Wellknown up to the Young Rider Division. You won't want to miss them here at Del Mar this year!

Tiffany Mahoney is a Rancho Santa Fe local and one you'll want to keep an eye on this week. She took home the blue in multiple classes last year here at Del Mar, n both the CDI and National classes. Later in the year, she and her Dutch gelding, Rey Del Mundo, "Rey," earned a win in the CDS Elite Regional Adult Competition at Intermediaire I. They topped off the season by winning the California Dressage Society's Horse of the Year in both the Amateur Prix St. Georges, Amateur Intermediaire I and won the Great American/USDF Region 7 Amateur Intermediaire I Championships! We can't wait to see what the 2019 season has in store for them.

Steffen Peters is always one of the top riders to watch at Del Mar and this year is no different. Peters and Akiko Yamazaki's Four Winds Farm's gelding, Suppenkasper, won last year's Grand Prix Freestyle here at National, were part of the US Silver Medal winning team at the 2018 World Equestrian Games and the pair are undefeated in 2019 Grand Prix competiion at the West Coast Dressage Festival. We will look forward to seeing them again in the Del Mar Arena this year to defend their title.

Nick Wagman, the runner up in last year's Grand Prix Freestyle, will return to Del Mar as well this year with Beverly Gepfer's Zenith to challenge Peters and Suppenkasper. Sabine Shut-Kery and Alice Womble's Hanoverian stallion, Sanceo, successfully overcame Peters and Rosamond last year in the Grand Prix Special to take home the blue and will be competing in the Grand Prix Freestyle this year! We look forward to a night of exhilarating competition this year!
