The 21st Western States Horse Expo, May 9-12 at the Murieta Equestrian Center in Rancho Murieta, California, promises equestrian events and shopping opportunities beyond your wildest dreams!

Before you start reading about all the incredible (and new!) things offered this year (including the new location), go to www.horsexpo.com and download daily schedules and a map of the Murieta Equestrian Center. This information will serve as your program. So don’t leave home without it! (Or remember to bring your cell phone so you won’t miss a thing on the agenda.) And for goodness sake, buy your tickets and parking passes online where you’ll be rewarded with significant discounts. For instance, parking passes are half-price online!

If it’s tough for you to just observe the many talented presenters at the Expo, then choose to participate! There are clinics that cover topics such as understanding saddle fit and red light therapy. And the NRHA Reining Boot Camp welcomes beginners and non-pros. Sign up right away — entries are almost filled. Information about all the possibilities can be found at www.horsexpo.comand click on “Be a part of the Expo” at the top.

Need we remind you how incredible the shopping is at the Horse Expo? Dust off your wish list, pack an extra credit card, and shop ‘til you drop! Remember that you can stash your purchases at Park Your Packages so you don’t have to haul them around all day. And if you have more packages than hands, the nice people at Park Your Packages will tote them out to your car.

Equus Masters promises to be a four-day journey with four trainers starting four mustangs with kindness, cooperation and gentleness — and without pain or anxiety. This isn’t a “yahoo stand-in-the-saddle and crack a whip on a shut-down horse” event — just the opposite. This event emphasizes the dignity of the horse. Judges Pat Parelli and Eitan Beth-Halachmy will assess how the horses progress, and Master of Ceremony Chris Cox will comment during the event, so attendees will “see” what the judges see. Competitors are Wylene Davis, Brandi Lyons, Madison Shambaugh, and Matt Bischof. Tickets for the event include a “Competitors and Judges Meet-and-Greet” (selfies galore!) as well as round pen sessions and a final showcase. (Well, OOOPS, this is a sell-out event, so check at the gate to see if there have been any ticket cancellations.)

There’s so much more at this year’s Expo, including R3C Adoption of four horses trained by prison inmates under the guidance of professional Joe Misner. Bring your checkbook on Sunday and adopt one of these well-started BLM mustangs.

If you’ve been curious about Cowboy Dressage, all your questions will be answered here — either at their booth or by watching the Cowboy Dressage Clinics in the Merhow Arena. A bonus is that the clinics are being taught by two of the founders of Cowboy Dressage, Eitan Beth-Halachmy and Lyn Ringrose-Moe. What a unique opportunity to watch the best-of-the-best teach Cowboy Dressage!

If you think cart driving is just for little ol’ ladies and a prancing horse, think again! The NCDC Combined Driving Event is modeled after the ridden Three-Day Event, where harnessed horses are tested in driven dressage, cross-country marathon, and cone driving competition. There are few things more exciting than watching a carriage sliding like crazy around an obstacle, dirt flying, then driving flat-out to the next test — all while a brave person is balancing off the back, leaning for all they’re worth, acting as ballast and equilibrium. Zowie!

If hand-crafting is up your alley, great classes await your talent. There are still a few slots for learning leather braiding, cinch making, and paracord braiding. Find out about these classes on the Horse Expo website and sign up!

Here’s a unique opportunity to be up-close-and-personal with some of the rarest and unique breeds in North America! The SANA West Rare Breeds Show at the Expo will include competitions that highlight horses found on the Equine Conservation list.

Bring your notebook to the Horse Expo University area where you’ll learn from veterinarians, innovators, industry leaders and health care experts.

And bring your appetite! Horse Expo has lassoed a whole variety of food trucks this year — all new to the Expo audience.

So take your vitamins, pack your water bottles, arrange to meet with friends, and Horse Expo On! We are so delighted to welcome you to this all-new, all-exciting event. Thanks so much for being a part of Western States Horse Expo!
