Well-known equine nutritionist helps create new forage ration balancer.

Select The Best® and Clair Thunes, PhD have worked together to create Select Grass and Select Alfalfa, a premium forage ration balancer formulated with the latest science to meet the ever-changing nutritional needs of today’s horse.

Here’s an explanation of why these products are important and how they work.

Calcium/Phosphorus levels: Are they balanced in your horse’s forage-based diet?
•    Calcium and Phosphorus ratios should ideally be between 1.5 and 2 times more Calcium than Phosphorus in the ration.
•    Legumes such as alfalfa provide significantly more Calcium than grass hays. This can result in a ration that has a Calcium to Phosphorus ratio that is far higher than ideal.
•    Grass hays and grain hays on the other hand tend to be lower in Calcium. Some may, in fact, provide more Phosphorus than calcium.
•    Select Alfalfa provides only 0.5 grams of Calcium but 5 grams of Phosphorus in order to bring the overall ration Calcium Phosphorus closer to the ideal range.
•    Select Grass provides 5 grams of Calcium and less (2 grams) Phosphorus.
•    Macrominerals are minerals required by your horse in gram quantities each day (Calcium, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Sodium, Chloride, Potassium). They are major contributors to the skeleton, muscle function, nerve conduction and fluid balance.
Skeletal health not only requires adequate quantities of these important macrominerals, they must also be present in the correct amounts relative to each other. This is particularly true of Calcium and Phosphorous.

Additional Benefits of Select Grass or Select Alfalfa
•    Yea-Sacc® is a yeast culture specifically selected for its influence on animal performance. It has been proven by a large body of research clarifying its mode of action and performance responses, Yea-Sacc is ideal for performance horses and breeding programs. By stabilizing cecal and colon pH, it supports a healthy gastro-intestinal tract. By aiding in the digestion of fiber, providing more energy for performance and pleasure horses, as well as older horses. Improved digestion also enhances Phosphorus and Calcium availability for greater bone strength. Yea-Sacc also stimulates milk production in lactating mares, and produces more nitrogen for higher milk quality – resulting in healthier foals.
•    Sel-Plex®: Select Grass & Alfalfa use an organic form of selenium yeast that is better absorbed, stored and utilized than other inorganic forms. Selenium plays an essential role in metabolism, supporting growth, reproduction and neutralizing free radicals and supporting the body’s normal defense mechanism against infection. Selenium is essential to muscle development, tone and function. Sel-Plex is the most researched organic selenium and is also the only FDA reviewed and first EU approved source of organic selenium.

Vitamins & Trace Minerals
•    Zinpro® Trace Minerals: The health and performance of your horse demands a solid nutrition program. Specifically trace minerals including Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Cobalt are essential for horse health, growth and performance. Zinpro 4-Plex C provides organic forms of these critical trace minerals in a form that delivers optimum absorption. Zinpro 4-Plex C increases milk production, improves performance and is essential for proper growth, skeletal soundness, tissue repair, wound healing, sexual maturity, reproductive capacity, and immune response in horses. Backed by extensive research and manufacturing by patented processes, Zinpro 4-Plex C is the best source of trace minerals for your horse.
•    Select Grass & Alfalfa are formulated with Vitamins A, D, E, K, and B
-    Vitamin A: Supports vision & responsiveness of immune system.
-    Vitamin D: Helps facilitate the uptake & release of Calcium.
-    Vitamin E: Our natural source of Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol) is scientifically proven to be more readily absorbed, providing optimal anti- oxidant support for horses & aiding in post exercise recovery.
-    Vitamin K: Necessary for blood clotting and the utilization of several proteins throughout the body.
-    Vitamin B: Bacteria in the hind gut can manufacture its own B Vitamins, but we made sure to provide some additional Vitamin B support as it can be beneficial for enzyme support as well as support for the metabolism, energy and more.
