The North American Working Equitation Championships, featuring horses and riders from as far away as Michigan and Alberta, Canada, will include three jam-packed days of competition.

Working Equitation was created to celebrate the partnership between horse and rider with a focus on classical horsemanship and use of the horse for ranch work. The aim of the sport is to preserve and perpetuate each country’s type of riding, as well as the various working equestrian traditions and the tack and attire that each nation brings to the sport.

Riders are allowed to use any legal tack and attire (Western, Dressage, Hunt, Charro, Australian, etc.), but must maintain consistent tack and attire throughout the competition. In the Introductory through Intermediate B levels, riders may use either one or two hands on the reins, regardless of tack and attire. At the Advanced level, riders must use only one hand on the reins at all times when competing. Anything more than a momentary adjustment of the reins with the other hand results in disqualification.

Working Equitation competitions consist of four distinct trials or tests. The first three, Dressage, Ease of Handling, and Speed are always offered. The fourth, the Cow Trial, is included at some team competitions, but will not be offered at the 2019 North American Championship. Horse/rider pairs receive scores based on their placing in each trial, and these scores are tallied to determine the overall placings at the competition.

Spectators are encouraged to attend, free of charge.
