'Consider it lunch with the experts,' said USEF Youth Chef d’equipe DiAnn Langer. But on Saturday night, it was dinner and Q&A with five superstars for the 24 riders who earned their spots in the Gold Star clinic. From left are 2008 Olympic team gold medalist Will Simpson, 2012 World Cup Champion and 2012 Olympian Rich Fellers; top international rider Kirsten Coe; US High Performance Team Vet Dr. Geoff Vernon; and lead clinician Richard Spooner, long time star of the national and international jumping circuit. Their collective wit and wisdom made for an unforgettable evening.

Our team was flung far and wide this past month. I hit the first week of the HITS Coachella (aka “Thermal,” and aka “Indio” to those of us of a certain vintage), Anne Hempy traveled to Sacramento for the California Dressage Society Annual Meeting & Symposium and editor Kim F Miller attended the USHJA Emerging Jumper Rider’s Gold Star Clinic, led by Richard Spooner, also at HITS Coachella. All of that happened just after our deadline for this issue, so stay tuned for coverage in our March edition.

Meanwhile, happy to bring you the latest on Wildflower Farm and Fortuna Del Charro, where new owner Alan Smith is creating a new model for happy, healthy horsekeeping. We have the scoop on Ali & Francie Nilforushan’s new h/j show series at Galway Downs and a sobering but useful piece from Susan Friend LeTourneur on preparing for and surviving a fire.

ADOPT ME! Red Bucket Introduces Roxy. It is by no coincidence that Roxy rhymes with moxie, and this 10 year old has moxie, work ethic, versatility....and yes, spots! Roxy, a POA mare, is approximately 10 years old, stands about 14hh, and is very versatile in that one can put a western saddle on and she looks like the ideal cow pony...trade the saddle for an english saddle and she rivals National Velvet...we have even jumped her a little, and she is happy to oblige! This special mare is best suited for a smaller intermediate adult who is confident, kind, and wants a horse that actually enjoys being ridden! Adoption fee is $1500 and serious adopters are invited to complete an adoption application available at www.redbucketrescue.org.

Ginger Freeman & Karine Brooks bring interesting coverage of clinics with Canadian course designer Peter Grant and East Coast-based international jumper, Mark Leone. Both took place during the relative down-time on the show circuit, an increasingly brief period that is now over as HITS Coachella is fully underway, with a World Cup qualifier on Feb. 10 and the AIG Million on March 18. Not to mention the final two weeks of the Adequan West Coast Dressage Festival at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, the Galway Downs Winter Horse Trials Feb. 2-4 and numerous competitions in all disciplines throughout our readership area. Good luck and fun to all. Hope to see you out there and don’t forget to reach out to someone on our team with your news, pictures and story ideas! See our masthead (pg 6) for contact info on our team  members.

Happy Riding!
