In our June issue, we spotlighted riding programs that serve as gateways to our sport and this month we spotlight equestrians at a critical crossroad between that gateway and lifelong -- often professional -- engagement with equestrian sports: The Adequan FEI North American Youth Championships.

Cheryl & Kim at AHP

For the third year in a row, we have fun profiles and photos of the young riders from our region heading to this pivotal international competition. Eventers, dressage riders and two of our show jumping team members are featured in this edition. We’ll profile the rest of the Zone 10 jumping team in our August issue because that squad was not officially named in full until after our deadline.

The eventing Championships take place July 18-22 at Rebecca Farm in Kalispell, MT, and jumping and dressage will take place concurrently Aug. 1-5 at Old Salem Farm in New York.

Along with talent and practice, for the riders and horses, these teams are backed by legions of volunteers, coaches, trainers, team parents, corporate sponsors and individual donors. We hope you’ll consider adding your support in the form of a monetary donation to help defray the considerable expenses for each team. Info for doing so can be found along with the rider profiles in this issue.

Fittingly, Sunsprite Warmbloods is our cover feature this issue. Along with breeding terrific sport horses, they are super supporters of the Area VI Young Rider eventing program.

We hope you’ll also enjoy our extensive Feature Focus on fitness and nutrition for horses and people. Dressage trainer Amélie Kovac, junior eventer Krista Stevenson and professional show jumper Kenneth Vinther share their strategies in this department, and several of our great advertisers provide information on their nutritional supplements and products.

On a personal note, editor Kim F Miller and I had a terrific time at the American Horse Publications annual conference in Baltimore. It’s tough to take time away from the phone or computer in the middle of our deadline, but well worth it thanks to the great ideas, new and old friends and a good bit of fun, too. See Out & About for scenes from our super enjoyable tour of the Maryland Hunt Country.

Happy reading and riding!
