Dr. Gregory Ferraro

California Governor Gavin Newsom has appointed Dr. Gregory Ferraro to the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB). Dr. Ferraro was the director of the University of California, Davis Center for Equine Health from 1997 to 2011 and associate director of the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital from 2011 to 2014. A well-known surgeon and Thoroughbred racehorse specialist who earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Ferraro was among the first to adapt human arthroscopic surgical techniques in horses.

“I am honored to be selected by the governor to serve on the Board,” said Ferraro. “I intend to make a very strong effort to improve the situation of horse racing in California.  I am looking forward to working with all partners involved in the horse racing industry.”

Dr. Ferraro brings more than 25 years of racetrack veterinary experience to his new role, along with a well-established record of successful private practice and university service. He has held leadership positions with several influential organizations, including the Equine Advisory Task Force for the California Department of Food and Agriculture, the California Thoroughbred Foundation, the California State Veterinary Medical Board, the Horse Racing Board Medication Committee, the Southern California Equine Foundation, the International Animal Welfare Training Institute, and the Dolly Green Research Foundation. He is currently a member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners and the American Veterinary Medical Association.

The UCD Center for Equine Health: As part of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, the Center for Equine Health is dedicated to advancing the health, welfare, performance and veterinary care of horses through research, education and public service. This is accomplished by providing academic leadership and by serving as the organizational umbrella under which equine research is funded and conducted at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. The Center brings together research facilities, students, veterinary residents, researchers, and veterinarians to tackle important problems affecting horse health. For more information visit
