August is vacation month for much of the world, but not for many West Coast-based equestrians. Through late July and August, our region’s riders contributed to great results at the Pan American Games and the North American Youth Championships. You’ll find reports on all those competitions in this issue, along with coverage of the many and diverse shows and events in California – from the Hansen Dam Summer Junction’s chance to dabble in different disciplines to Dancing King Farm’s celebration of the P.R.E. horse. Enjoy!

The big regional news was Apex Equisports’ takeover of the HITS hunter/jumper circuits in Thermal and Tucson, AZ. The new ownership group consists of active West Coast exhibitors, led by Steve Hankin, who brings a career’s worth of experience in the hospitality industry to the task. The HITS Desert Circuit has grown tremendously since it was launched and it will be interesting to see what the future holds under local ownership and direction.

Thanks to Mark Watring Stables for being our cover sponsor. We always love catching up with one of California’s most successful, kind and fun hunter/jumper professionals. As a rider, Mark has a long and varied international career that already spans two Olympics. “I think I have a third in me!” he told us.

Thanks to the many who contributed articles to this issue. One of my favorites is young rider Elisa Broz’ account of how she spent her summer vacation: riding with France-based American show jumper Alice Debany Clero. It included jumping on the beach, at low tide, in La Baule, France, learning to be a self-sufficient horsewoman and competing in European shows that are pretty different than those in the U.S.

We welcome story ideas and contributions. Our October issue has a special emphasis on eventing, which coincides nicely with the Area VI eventing championships slated for the Fresno County Horse Park Oct. 19-20, along with the Young Event Horse West Coast Championships. The month begins with the Woodside International Horse Trials up north, Oct. 3-6, and closes with the Galway Downs International Event & Horse Trials in Temecula Oct. 31-Nov. 3. It’s busy!!

The October issue will also include the first of three Gift Guides aimed at helping all be ready with great gifts for the holidays! Have a favorite idea-- either to give or receive? Let us know!

Happy reading and happy riding!
