I have been taking dressage lessons from Paul Cook at Cook Training Stables on Cathy Cook’s beautiful Friesian mare Vendi. It has been fun getting back in the saddle and riding is a super good therapy for lymphedema.

We hope you enjoy this issue packed full of dressage and equine therapy related articles, plus lots of news and features on inspiring horse people including Michele Bandinu, written by young Grand Prix rider AnnA Buffini, and Niki Clarke. We’ve got the scoop on parts of the USEF Festival of Championships coming to the Paso Robles Horse Park in October, and George Williams’ excellent USDF Region 7 clinic, written by participant Arianna Barzman-Grennan.

With the California Dressage Society Junior/Young Rider Championships, North & South, set for this month, Michele Vaughn picked a terrific topic for our regular Dressage Life column: show prep. It’s a must for veterans and newbies, participants and pit crew, alike. In another regular column, My Thoroughbred Makeover, Emily Flaxman explains how world champ Charlotte Dujardin influenced her daily routine with her dressage-bound OTTBs.

And of course we have an Olympic preview of our show jumping, eventing and dressage teams competing in Rio this month.

Unfortunately, fire season got off to an early start this summer and was raging as we went to press. Evacuations have been happening all across the state and we hope everyone heeds the warnings to evacuate early. Hundreds of horses are currently evacuated from the Sand Fire in the Santa Clarita Mountains, where 35,000 acres have burned, destroying at least 18 homes. See our fire stories, starting on page 62. If you have news to share please let us know.

Congratulations to our editor Kim F. Miller on her Alltech’s A+  Journalism award. See page 68 Kim and our creative director Alicia Anthony do a fantastic job every month and we are glad to have them on our team. Big thanks to all of our contributors who’ve helped make this an awesome issue. And thank you for reading and advertising.

We’re already at work on our September issue, which will feature reports from our rider’s experience at the North American Junior Young Rider Championships in late July. The chefs d’equipe for all three teams, jumping, dressage and eventing, have agreed to file stories of their experience with and perspective on the Championships. We’re also working on interesting grooming and hoof care articles, too, and welcome your input on what you’d like to read about.

Happy reading & Riding!

Sephora is a beautiful and sweet bay Thoroughbred mare up for adoption at FalconRidge Equine Rescue in northern San Diego County.

Her registered name is Bountys Beauty and she is 15 years old.

She never raced and was rescued at auction last year.

Sephora arrived with slight intermittent lameness on her right front, which appears to be better with shoes on now.

She stands 16 hands high and is very willing under saddle.

Sephora would need to be slowly conditioned as she has not been ridden in many years.

Compliant under saddle in the arena and roundpen with her rider.

Super sweet! Adoption fee is $500.
